WHAT IS INVOLVED IN JOINING

THE HUMMINGBIRD COLLECTIVE?

For those unfamiliar with the concept, a collective is essentially a shared space for crafters, makers, and creators to come together. Each participant rents their own area within the shop to display their products, create, and collaborate with like-minded small businesses. This setup allows members to reach new audiences and regular customers while building a community of people who value their work. We do not operate on a "rent-a-shelf" basis and do not take commissions. Instead, we aim to create a model that suits your circumstances, finances, and lifestyle commitments.

You might be at a stage in your life or career where you're considering a job change, exploring a hobby, or even thinking about retirement. Perhaps you're looking for a new outlet for your creativity or a way to make your hobby profitable. Maybe you've always wanted to run a small shop but are hesitant due to costs and commitments involved. The collective model could be the solution for you.

Collectives, craft hubs, and independent galleries have grown increasingly popular during challenging economic times, as many individuals cannot afford to start a business on their own or lack enough products to fill a shop. Sharing space and receiving guidance and support can make this a feasible option.

Each store has its own distinctive style, providing ample space to display your products effectively. We will work with you to discuss the best ways to promote and showcase your products, considering the environment, placement, and lighting.

INTERESTED IN JOINING US?

If you’ve read this far, and are still reading, that’s a great sign!

Here are some important points to consider if you wish to join one of our collective stores:

  • You should WANT to be involved in and promote the collective for a minimum initial period of six months or 12 months depending on the location.

  • You should wish to embrace the collective working model of supporting each other and working as a team player.

  • You may exercise a 30-day or 60-day notice period at any time, but we ask that you speak to us first in case we can address any issues or concerns which may affect your ability to sell or be seen by your audience.

  • You should be able to visit the shop regularly to stock, refresh and restock, tidy nd display your products.

  • You should be eager to promote and advertise your role in the collective on your own social media channels.

  • A monthly rental fee will apply, but there are no commissions taken, nor deductions.

  • A £2 stationery contribution is required per month to save you the hassle of buying your own and to keep a level of symmetry.

  • You should be able to display your business name (ideally with a logo, business card, or sign, which we can help create if needed).

  • You should be able to dedicate at least one day per week to work on the shop rota.

  • We offer stockist-only options if shop time is not feasible for you or you are still in full time work.

  • If you have more time than money, we can work with you on a reduced rental fee in exchange for more hours dedicated to the collective model.

  • You would need to be available just before shop opening hours on your chosen workday and just after (10-4pm)

  • You must have your own public liability insurance, similar to what is required for trading at markets.

  • You will be happy to complete a HR form so that we know who to contact in case of an emergency.

  • You should be willing to join a WhatsApp group to connect with other like-minded individuals who wish to support each other’s success and are based in your particular shop team.

Rental fees vary by location based on different rate brackets and postcodes, and will be discussed privately. In most cases, we provide the shop fittings unless you bring a unique setup or display that you prefer to use or that you know works well for your product. We encourage you to showcase your products in a way that best reflects your brand and encourage creativity.
